For all that the Boston Public Library, or at least the old part, is lovely and inviting, I never used it as a place to borrow books. We met there, used the restrooms, used the wifi, enjoyed the art, but the stacks and catalogue were impenetrable. I bought more books in that town than ever before in my life. Good bookstores, give 'em that.

Oh, MAN! Me, in the Harvard University Bookstore... DANE-GER-US!
We preferred the Harvard Book Store ( http://www.harvard.com/ ) over "the Coop" - which is after all just a Barnes & Nibble.
My wife used to work at Chapters, a Canadian big box book store chain, and with her employee discount our book collection became substantial. Since she left we have been far more reliant on the local library.
I was just about to draw attention to the bookstore at Harvard and, lo, I've been beaten to the draw.
I agree that it's a dangerous place to browse but I find ABE even more dangerous. A casual decision to re-read a book published thirty years ago can easily lead to the acquisition of the whole oeuvre. Because they're all there and they cost 50 c. each. (Always forgetting that for Brits £3 p&p must be added).
