"And the question is, do you as a society force them to do that out of principle?"
Yes. Yes, we do. If the principle is to serve people regardless of their ethnicity, or religion, or gender, then, yes. If your religion says you have to treat anyone with genetics that express as dark skin as second class, then don't go into any public service business. If you can't get your head around the fact that sexual orientation is any more a moral choice than if we "prefer" to be male or female, then no, you don't get to refuse them service.
I didn't make a moral choice to be a woman. Decided long before I was born. And if a culture has an issue with that, then the government has a responsibility to enforce a principle of justice and equality on them. Other gender variations are the same.
And no one needs to "promote" heterosexual marriage. It's the assumption and norm, and needs no more forcing. If it's falling apart, it's about more than a law that allows any other group to benefit from the same status.
Marriage fell apart because it was no longer the only choice for women, no longer the enforced state for anyone wanting any place in society. Maybe, only half of people need to be coupled in this way, and orientation and gender identification has nothing to do with this. If this causes societal disruption, then it needs to be turned over and changed. Ending slavery causes turmoil, does this mean we should defend it because of the bother?
By their fruits shall you know them.
Do onto others as you would have them do unto you.
Love one another, be kind to one another.
Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye.
Compassion, really, really the way through. Compassion for the closed minded does not mean letting them continue to be cruel.

Amen, sister.
I heard some of the Sups comments yesterday about the newness of same sex marriage and their reluctance to jump in at this stage of the game. Several expressed the desire that the states work it out for themselves and knock the new off.
I feel like we are living in the radical future since I am a female and I have control of my reproductive system. This is not a natural or a historical state of being. Many things are now possible for me with this control. Newness does not frighten me.
And lordy if you want to be conservative you might want to shore up the institution of marriage by letting those interested parties participate.
The arguments keep shifting because the real reason is crazy. It's not the children, or the sin of it all, but that gender is not as absolute and immutable as they want it to be.
Cuts at the root of their own identity, I think.
Yes, re compassion. Same as forgiveness doesn't mean letting the person who hurt you keep hurting you.
Reality is stranger than we may be comfortable with, which may be why we're so attached to our illusions of certainty.
Sorry Zhoen, I did comment but it seems that somehow it disappeared. And my comment was too long to try to resurrect it from memory. I seem to have got bogged down in this new form of 'comment verification.' In your case I had to identify all the rice only pictures. It really is a pain!
I'm blessed or fortunate, you pick, to have good friends who are minorities, who are gay, who are women and so on. From a fairly rare group, I also am on acquaintance terms with someone who is transitioning from male to female and am an internet-friend of two others who have already transitioned.
By having as friends people with such varied 'attributes' I feel I have a broader sense of acceptance or understanding. At least, I hope for and strive for this.
Fresca,
Strangeness completely unhinges some folks.
Phil,
I'm sure you are right. You see these groups as individuals, not abstractions, not things or problems. They have faces and stories and are more than just that one aspect.
i totally love you right now.
flask,
Hugs.
