Remembered at that moment the leap year rules, struggled through elementary arithmetic, and as soon as I dislodged cat, I looked it up. Sure enough. And will be the Year of the Red Monkey in February. Choose your calendar.
Dylan rubbed my shoulders with wintergreen glycerine rubbing alcohol, which is always surprizingly helpful. He broiled up steak that he started marinating several days ago, for lunch. I made mashed potatoes, he stir fried some red and orange peppers. A lunch worthy of the first day of the year, put it that way.
We ventured out to The King's English bookshop. Tight quarters when empty, with their annual sale on, it was downright smooshed, but friendly for all that. I picked up Sarah Vowell's book, Dylan found another Simenon, I still have a Nero Wolfe (from the library) to finish first.
As I read, Eleanor perched her back paws on my raised knees, shoved her face into my breast and sucked and kneaded. Then nestled in for a long head scritch, finally just pooled in my lap. Nice to be someone's home.
Picked up a whole package of kiwis on Wednesday, eating them two at a time, each. A delight on such cold days. It was -1˚F -18C, at the airport this morning.

Head starting to ease, all referred neck and shoulder pain. Called off Monday, so I have to get some projects done over those three days. So much mending I should be doing, but I can't read at the same time, and I want to read. Tired of wearing dull colors, too. Dug out the fuschia sweater, which helps. I have limited tolerance for darning and sewing, need music or recorded books, and even then. Prefer to read.
Struggling to write these days. Just want to read and sleep.

HppyNwYr. Hope it has lots of sleeping and reading for all!
Nimble,
Zzzzzz...
your dinner sounds delicious. happy new year!
He did a beautiful job of it.
I've been deep sleeping a lot the past few weeks---I figure somehow I need it.
Maybe it's hanging out with bears---is hibernation catching? :)
Perhaps fuschia helps keep us awake, since we have to be.
Fresca,
Apparently what bears do isn't exactly hibernation, by the technical definition. And I read about northern French peasants who would sleep for days at a time through the worst of the winter, conserving energy. Have to see if I can find citations for either of these.
Sorry about your first of the year icky feeling. I turned out the light at 9:30 after trying to read so I even missed New Year's ball drop in New York. It just doesn't seem important any more.
Catalyst,
I was crashed by 9, only woke because there are fireworks downtown at midnight. Felt better as the day woke up.
Cold here today, the forecast high is -14C, about 7F. Sunny, though.
