Next

We went to the adoption center. An older cat sat on Dylan. At 13, shaved down, it is apparent he had issues. But we have to take into account Eleanor's need for a chase friend. And our own fatigue caring for an ailing cat this year. We'd taken along the carrier, and were prepared if we found the right cat. It was not to be today, though.

I don't think we realized how our own care for Moby's increasingly limited world, making sure he felt safe, has worn on us. We did it all gladly. But now, couldn't face taking on an older cat, not this year. Not for ourselves. And not for Eleanor.

So, we came back home and will await developments. Best not to rush these things.

The right fit might be a stray. All my cats were strays, some of the best cats I've ever encountered. Regardless, the right fit will come along and you both will recognize each other. Cats are sensitive (but you know that), they sense when we are grieving, upset...at least mine always did.

How is Eleanor taking the absence of Moby?

We had two cats for 15 years and they took their time to tolerate each other. Being outdoor cats helped. But only after the older (and first) cat had died did we see the younger cat develop a real independent and playful and boisterous side. It was lovely to watch her come more and more into herself - not that she had ever seemed lost or unwell before just a little bit timid at times - and we decided to let her have it all. Never regretted it.

gz,
Cats pick you, or not.

Crow,
That was how it was when I was a kid. Spaying/neutering reduces the stray population, thankfully, so that doesn't work now. We are searching. Eleanor seems a bit off, snubbing us, then demanding. We will give her more attention, but I think she really would prefer a cat friend.

Sabine,
Moby was always a solo cat, and took a long time to tolerate Eleanor. I think she will do better with another cat to chase with, she's been looking for him today, mewing at us.
