Checkout

Know what I love? When I go into the big grocery store, and I get beer, through the self-checkout, and the cashier on duty glances at me and my long grey hair, and clears me through.

I never, ever, object to showing my ID, cooperating with the poor schlub working a poorly paid job, no matter the circumstances. But I relish being called ma'am, and getting waved through, as obviously not new, t'ain't my first rodeo, haven't seen twenty in decades don't miss it, no girl, not to be messed with.

Love it.

For so many years, dying my hair, because I was not ready for it. No more.

I have the slights glint of grey starting.

I started going grey at 27, which is why I dyed it so long. Really couldn't deal with that image of myself when I was that young. I got better.

I've got some white hairs in the brown now-gives it a party glint for free!
I could never dye it to hide it. Though I can understand why.

Hooray! I love gray, white, silver. It becomes most people, I think.

Hooray for grey hairs!
I've had two young guys at checkouts call me 'Love' this week. That's been a new experience!

Ah, but then there comes a point when there's an assumption that you can't work the card machine or remember your PIN number! A subtle slide......

At the self-checkout tonight, I was down at the end bagging the beer when the store employee yelled "Are you 21?" Heads turned. I yelled back, "Yep. Have been for a couple of decades now but thanks for asking!"

Premature grey runs in my family. I don't mind the idea, but whenever someone calls me "sir" I always have a "Who, me?" moment.

Pacian,
I learned it in the military, where all female officers are ma'am. I wasn't an officer, but I did consider it for a while, and would have been with my degree. So, I like ma'am.

RR,
Yeah, I'll prepare myself for that.

Rou,
Ha!
