Alarming

The building folks are doing the annual testing of the fire alarms this week. Moby hates this, it obviously hurts him and terrifies him, and we wish there were some way to shield him, or get him out of it, in a way that isn't worse. Boarding would not be better, adding the risk of respiratory infection from other animals. Cats can't just be taken for a walk up the canyon for a few hours. No one here can really take him for a few hours, ok, up to seven hours. Our best plan is to provide him with a well muffled closet, wool blankets, maybe even get some acoustic foam. At least I have the day off, and can maybe just bag him and walk around the block, if they will give me some warning.

I'm sure you already know this, but you can help him to be less frightened by acting naturally when the alarm sounds and not making a fuss. If he sees that it doesn't bother you, then he'll follow your lead. My mum's cat used to cower at the least strange noise until she stopped comforting him when he did so.

I dropped a saucepan the other day and my normally unflappable cat ran off at a hundred miles per hour. Sometimes it's not always so good to have such powerful senses. :-|

Pacian,

We love storms, he cowers under the bed. What you say is true about most ordinary sounds, even loud ones. But the fire alarms are overwhelming, and nothing we do would make any difference. These are klaxons.
