Air is okay here, sorry it is so bad there.
I think to some extent I suspect a lot of leaders espouse views they don't believe just to get on top (President G.W. was reputedly like this when it came to evangelical Christianity) - but, at the same time, as they do this, they create an environment in which true believers actually can succeed.
Basically, I wouldn't be surprised either way. There are horrible people, and then there are merely amoral people who want in on their racket. Functionally the result is the same.
